DESCRIPTION

The historic Mecca Masjid is located adjacent to Charminar in a southwest direction. The construction of this mosque started in the year 1614 by Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah and was Aurangzeb completed in 1693.

Built with local granite, it finds its place among the largest mosques in India and is the city's most important and largest one. This mosque can accommodate 10,000 worshipers at any time.

The mosque was believed to have small red bricks from Mecca, which are positioned above the central arch. A room in the courtyard is believed to house a sacred relic of the prophet.

Visitors coming to Charminar also visit the holy mosque, which lends a divine aura to the Muslim worshippers in the old city of Hyderabad.

About the Artist

Lala Deen Dayal (1844 - 1905) popularly known as Raja Deen Dayal was born at Sardhana near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh in a Jain jewelers family. He studied engineering at Thompson Civil Engineering College, Roorkee after which he joined the public works department Indore as a head estimator and draftsman. His photographic career began in the 1870's, when he accompanied Sir Lepel Griffin on his Central India tour during which he photographed Gwalior, Khajuraho, and other Central India sites. He became the court photographer to the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mahbub Ali Khan, Asif Jah VI, who awarded him the title Raja Bahadur Musavvir Jung Bahadur, and he was appointed as the photographer to the Viceroy of India in 1885. He received the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1897. He won many awards in exhibitions in India and abroad, notably the World Colombian Commission in 1893 in the USA.
