DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage photograph of the Bombay Yacht Club founded in 1846 with Henry Morland as club commodore. In 1876 on the recommendation of Sir Philip Edmond Wodehouse, Queen Victoria permitted the club to use the title "Royal", and it became known as the Royal Bombay Yacht Club.
The seafront clubhouse was constructed in 1896 and received many prominent visitors including their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Connaught and many others. Having housed a great number of prominent and influential individuals over the years, the Royal Bombay Yacht Club exudes the exclusivity and grandeur of an era past.
The structure was designed by John Adams in Gothic revival style with medieval Tudor influences. It offers an expansive view of the Gateway of India and overlooks the Bombay harbour. Today the Royal Bombay Yacht Club is the oldest and the most majestic yacht club in Asia.
