DESCRIPTION
The Old Public Office or Attara Kacheri as it used to be known, now functions as the High Court at Bengaluru, Karnataka.
The High Court of the State of Mysore was established in the year 1864 and was known as Mysore High Court. It was in 1973 when the state?s name changed, that it was also renamed as ?High Court of Karnataka?.
Attara Kacheri translates to ?eighteen offices or departments?. The building was built in the neoclassical style, with Ionic columns of porticoes on the facades, and with the wings connected by arcade-style lengths. The construction of the building started in 1864 and was completed by 1868 under the supervision of Rao
Bahadur Arcot Narayanaswami Mudaliar, then Diwan of the Maharaja.
The structure has also survived a demolition scare in the 1980s and was saved by the Supreme Court?s decision based on a Public Interest Litigation - PIL by heritage concerned citizens.
