DESCRIPTION
This plate is inspired by an opaque watercolor painting of Kurma, the tortoise, Vishnu's second incarnation. Vishnu's body emerges from the tortoise's carapace, holding the chakra (discus) in his upper right hand and the shankha (conch) in his upper left. His lower right hand is in abhaya mudra, and his lower left is in varada mudra.
Kurma plays a crucial role in the Hindu myth of the churning of the Ocean of Milk, where gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain treasures. Vishnu, in the form of a tortoise, supports the churning stick on his back, symbolizing stability, balance, and perseverance in restoring cosmic order and retrieving valuable treasures.
