DESCRIPTION
This painted sketch could have been a rough draft, but it also works as a stand-alone work of art. As was customary for his birthday at the Kota Palace polo grounds, Maharao Ram Singh II is shown spearing a buffalo. The drawing shows how the Indian artist created his work: after sketching the main subject, he or she painted it with transparent or opaque water colour. The Maharaj and his horse were completed before any further participants were painted, and some of the backgrounds were even sketched.
