DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage photograph of Gateway of India located on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder, one of the most iconic structures of Mumbai overlooking the Arabian Sea. It was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder in 1911. The royal couple were in India to attend the third Delhi Durbar.
The foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid on 31 March 1911. The structure is an arch made of basalt rock, 85 feet high. The final design was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed and formally opened in 1924 by the then Viceroy Daniel Rufus Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading
Today the Gateway is synonymous with the city of Mumbai. Since its construction, the gateway has remained amongst the first structures visible to visitors arriving in Bombay by the sea. The Gateway of India remains the city's top tourist attraction and has also been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai.
