DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage photograph of Ghantaghar or the Northbrook Clocktower as it was formerly known, was perhaps the oldest built clock tower in India, before Rajabai Clock Tower, Mumbai, 1878, Husainabad Clock Tower, Lucknow, 1881, Secunderabad Clock Tower, Secunderabad, 1897 and Allahabad Clock Tower, Allahabad, 1913.
The Gothic structure was built in 1870 in Chandni Chowk, Delhi by Delhi Municipality at a cost of Rs. 28,000. It stood in its location until its partial collapse and subsequent demolition in the 1950s. The clock tower was never rebuilt as it was seen as an English relic, the location is still known as Ghantaghar despite the demise of the potential heritage gothic structure.
The tower was named after Thomas Northbrook, the Viceroy of India from 1872 to 1876. The term Chandni Chowk which translates to silvery or moonlit square originally referred to this particular location which later came to designate the entire street.
Today the location is a popular spot for civic events.
