DESCRIPTION
Bhuta Breastplates are considered sacred and are an important ceremonial part of the Bhuta Kola a ritual dance performance prevalent among the Hindus of Tulu Nadu and other parts of Karnataka, India. The term Bhuta Kola refers to spirit play in Tulu. Male performers participate in this event and clad their torsos in similar breastplates, in addition to elaborate headgear, mask, ornaments, and body paint.
This brass body mask is adorned with serpents one either side of the shoulder which is associated with Shiva and is also considered a symbol of fertility. The dark hue of this vintage tarnished brass Bhuta Breastplate adds to it?s quaintness.
