About the Art form
Pichwai art is a traditional Indian painting style that originated over 400 years ago in Nathdwara, a town in Rajasthan renowned for its temple dedicated to Shrinathji, a form of Lord Krishna.
The word Pichwai comes from the Sanskrit pichh (back) and wai (hanging), referring to the large, intricate cloth paintings that hang behind the deity in the temple.
These artworks are deeply devotional, depicting scenes from Krishnas life; especially his childhood exploits, the lifting of Mount Govardhan, and various seasonal festivals like Janmashtami and Sharad Purnima. Each painting is not just decorative but serves as a visual offering, or seva, to the deity.
Pichwai paintings are known for their rich detailing, vibrant natural colors, and the use of gold leaf. Traditionally painted on cotton or silk, they often feature motifs like lotuses, cows, gopis, and peacocks. The artists, many of whom still live and work in Nathdwara, often collaborate in close-knit communities to create these masterpieces.
